A month (or two ago?) I wrote a short piece of fiction (is it really fiction? Idk…). Actually, didn’t I write it sometime in the summer? I took a lot of the story from the Bible, so I think it is probably considered biblical fiction (maybe?). Anyway, I hope you enjoy it and are encouraged by it! Here goes!
One Step at a Time: From Darkness to Light
Darkness is all around. It is darker than black, blacker than dark. All is simply emptiness. You would run, but where can you run to? You would flee from this darkness, but only emptiness reflects from your eye. This emptiness presses in on you; its pressure you cannot bear. You run, you flee, as unwise as it would seem. The ground seems to roll out from under you feet as you flee away from what you are running towards. You stumble and fall on a rock you cannot see. Pain shoots through your arms and legs as you roll unstoppable down an endless hill. The earth quakes and the darkness roars, leaving you in the misery of an empty, soundless echo. You keep rolling, over stones and brush, grass and thorns, all the while gathering momentum.
Suddenly it all stops. A voice roars out “Peace! Be still!” The sound of that voice fills you, and catching a glimmer of light, you grasp for it. A hand reached out to grasp yours, and pulls you to you feet. Your eyes illuminate with light as you look with awe into the face of Love. “Child!” he says. “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither be afraid.” Tenderly, he looks you in the eye. “Child, do you believe that I can save you?” “Oh yes! You are my Saviour and I want to follow you wherever you go!” you exclaim enthusiastically, from a heart simply bursting with joy.
Presenting to you an unlit lantern, he tells you “In me is life, and this life is the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” Lighting your lamp, he continues, “Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent, a child of Myself, without blemish, in the midst of dark, crooked, and twisted surroundings, among which you shine as a light in this world.” Pointing far into the distance , he shows you a sparkle of light. “Always head towards that light. The farther you go towards the Light, the brighter it will become. No matter what happens, always turn back towards the Light. The Light in my Paradise, it is the Paradise of Salvation. Forget what lies behind and strain forward to what lies ahead. Go now, my child.”
In an instant, he is disappeared, gone from sight. Fear fills your heart and you are paralyzed in place. “What am I doing here? Where am I to go? How would I go anywhere without my Saviour?” “Behold!” cried the voice of love from heaven, “I am with you always, to the end of the age.” With fresh hope, you look around attempting to catch sight of the Lord of Hosts. Where was he? Beyond the dim light of your lantern was only more darkness. Discouraged and afraid you cry out “Who is to help me! Who is to go with me!” The voice from heaven answers “It is the Lord who goes before you. I will be with you. I will not leave you or forsake you. Do not be afraid; Do not be discouraged.”
You are encouraged by these words as you trust that He is with you even when you cannot see him. Suddenly, you are reminded of the lantern in your hand. You hold it forward, attempting to see farther ahead, but all the lantern gives is a small circle of light around you, just enough for one more step. That’s all you need. “But what is beyond this next step?” you worry. Then you are reminded of your Saviour’s words. “Strain forward towards what lies ahead………It is the Lord who goes before you. I will be with you. I will not leave you or forsake you. Do not be afraid. Do not be discouraged.” Your heart bursts with joy as you remember His promises. If God is for you, who can come against you? You strain your eyes forward, looking for that distant glimmer of light. “The Paradise of Salvation , he said….” you murmur to yourself in a voice full of wonder. With a joy uncontainable, you lift your eyes to heaven and cry out “Who am I, to be part of such a great salvation! Who am I, that the God of all heaven and earth, would bend down to save me from darkness!”
Oh, you are a long way from home, and you have many a battle to face ahead, but that needn’t concern you. You have been given one step at a time, and the joy and triumph over darkness that Jesus Christ has given you will enable you with strength to endure through every single struggle and every single battle. The way will not be easy, and there will be times when you cannot hold on, but through it all, the Lord of Hosts will hold you and will never let you go. He will never leave you nor forsake you. Just think of the wonderful Paradise that lies ahead. Just think of when forever HE shall be your God and you shall be one of HIS people. Just keep straining towards the goal. One step at a time. Ever onward to everlasting LIGHT!

The Lord my God illumines my darkness.” -Psalms 18:28 (NASB)
